Description

2048 is deceptively simple: a 4x4 grid, numbered tiles that start at 2 and 4, and one rule β€” slide the whole board in a direction and any two tiles carrying the same number merge into one that's double the value. Slide right, everything shifts right and matching neighbors combine; slide down, the same thing happens vertically. Do that enough times and a 2 eventually becomes a 4, then an 8, then a 16, all the way up toward the tile that gives the game its name.

The tension comes from the fact that every slide adds a new tile to the board, and the grid never gets any bigger. Early on it feels harmless, but the further you push toward 2048 the more that shrinking free space starts to matter β€” one careless move can lock a high-value tile in a corner where it can't merge with anything, and from there the board fills up fast.

Strategy That Actually Works

Why It's Still Popular

2048 has stuck around because the rules are learnable in ten seconds but the ceiling for skill is much higher than it looks β€” reaching the 2048 tile takes real planning, and pushing past it toward 4096 or 8192 is its own challenge. It's also the kind of game you can play in short bursts, which makes it a natural companion to other quick browser puzzles on GBK Games like Tomb of the Mask or a longer idle session in AdVenture Capitalist.
