Friday Night Funkin' began as a small indie project first shown off at a Newgrounds-hosted game jam in late 2020, and its catchy soundtrack, expressive pixel-art characters, and simple-but-demanding rhythm gameplay helped it explode into one of the most popular indie games of the following years. Its open, moddable structure led to an enormous fan community building custom songs, characters, and entire story mods, arguably becoming as well known for its mod scene as for the base game itself.
Structurally it belongs to the rhythm-battle genre — call-and-response note charts where you answer an opponent's musical phrase with your own — but its distinct art style, humor, and characters gave it an identity that stood out sharply from other browser rhythm games at the time.
The objective in each song is to out-perform your opponent by hitting notes accurately and on time, building your score high enough to win the musical showdown and progress to the next encounter.
Its catchy music and expressive character designs make it one of the most beloved indie rhythm games in recent memory. GBK Games also has Friday Night Funkin' vs Xe for a popular fan-made expansion.
